Lucite Lamps

Lucite Lamps

I am lucky enough to have inherited a few amazing lamps from my grandmothers.  Two of them are lucite – which I learned is actually plastic and not some special form of glass.  While this may be common knowledge, it was not to me and I ended up ruining one by using a nubby sponge to clean it.  It is now a style I call “crackled lucite”.

You can find special products for cleaning lucite and some people claim that  Turtle Wax works wonders and sometimes even removes scratches.  The simplest way is to use a soft cloth, lukewarm water, and a bit of mild dish soap.

Lighting Up Your Work Space

Office and Work Space Lighting

Since I woke up thinking it was Monday and it is actually Tuesday, I decided that my thoughts really need to be on work – at least for today. My office is in my home and I am lucky to be placed right in front of a giant window with lots of natural light coming in. That is helpful until the sun goes down – the time when I actually do my best work.

Day or night, the key to good office lighting is flexibility. It is helpful to have multiple sources of light to reduce eye strain. Of course, direct task lighting is important so you are able to direct light where you need it the most. Sconces and hanging pendants are wonderful for reading nooks. Mixing table or floor lamps into your lighting scheme will allow you to vary the brightness and color. Be practical but don’t forget to choose fixtures that show off your personal style and make your workplace unique to you.

Weekends on the Porch

Porch Lighting

Mondays are never easy but this one seems especially difficult since the weather forecast is not to my liking.  This past weekend in Charlottesville was two glorious days of perfect spring weather. Our neighborhood was full of people biking, playing ball, walking themselves and their dogs, and doing lots of yard work.  The best part was the smell of the grills being fired up late in the afternoon as everyone started to wind down and get into relax mode.  I am sooooo ready for leisurely evenings spent on the porch eating kabobs, drinking wine, and talking about anything and everything.
